A clinically proven treatment for dry eye syndrome using Thermal Pulse Technology

Lipiflow1.jpg
Lipiflow® Thermal Pulsation

Lipiflow® is a dry eye treatment device specifically designed to effectively clear blockages from the Meibomian glands, restoring healthy production of the oils that make up the protective surface layer of the tear film. Lipiflow is a gold standard treatment for Meibomian gland dysfunction - the most common cause of dry eye disease.

Meibomian gland dysfunction has been identified as a principal cause of dry eye disease. It results in the tear film becoming unstable, leading to excessive evaporation of tears. It is now acknowledged that most cases of evaporative dry eye are primarily due to a compromised external lipid layer of the tear film, caused by malfunctioning meibomian glands.

How Lipiflow® Works

LipiFlow® utilizes a single-use activator device that safely and comfortably delivers controlled heat and massage to the Meibomian glands within the eyelid.

The activator is placed onto the eye, under the eyelid, and is contoured above the cornea to protect the structures of the patient’s eye throughout the treatment.

The activator device warms the eyelid to 42.5°Ϲ, liquifying any thickened oils within the Meibomian glands. Regulated pulsating massage is applied to the eyelids to expel the stagnant oils and to help promote healthy Meibomian gland function.

  • The Lipiflow® activator is positioned with the vaulted corneal shield located under each eyelid to protect the surface of the eye.

  • During the 3 treatment cycles, controlled heat and rhythmic pressure directed onto the eyelids

  • The patient can return to their regular daily activities immediately after the treatment

Efficacy of Lipiflow®

Lipiflow® treatment helps to improve Meibomian gland function and stabilize the lipid tear layer. Maximum results are typically experienced 6-8 weeks after the treatment and may last 9-15 months for many patients.

Lipiflow® is a clinically proven technology and has become the gold standard treatment of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. A single Lipiflow® treatment can help improve dry eye symptoms and help prevent permanent damage to the Meibomian glands. It is recommended to repeat Lipiflow® treatment once symptoms return.

On Lipiflow Thermal Pulsation

I have found Lipiflow to be an extremely helpful tool to treat Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). In the past, we have recommended warm compress therapy to our patients in an attempt to heat the Meibomian glands & reduce blockages caused by thickened oils. However, this can be time-consuming, requires ongoing attention, and can be ineffective for many people.

Lipiflow now offers a superior method for our patients to improve their Meibomian gland function with a single in-office treatment. Lipiflow is the most widely studied treatment for MGD we have available - with over 30 peer-reviewed studies showing its efficacy. The response from our patients has been impressive & we are starting to learn more about how our dry eye treatments complement each other. For example, the E>Eye IRPL treatment when combined with Lipiflow can have a synergistic effect on improving dry eye symptoms.

Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions regarding the Lipiflow treatment or call our office to schedule a consultation to see if you may be a candidate.
